The Ghost of the Union Captain

yankeeWelcome to my ghost story.  For a medium, I don’t have a lot of experience with earth-bound spirits or ghosts.  Most of my conversations with spirits are with those on the Other Side.  But each time I encounter a ghost, I learn a little more about how they operate.  This story is about the first time I met one.  (That I am aware of…)

I was touring a real Southern plantation in Louisiana a few years ago.  It had been developed in the late 1700s, and had been owned by the same family through all those generations until shortly before I went to tour it.  In the year or so before, the family had donated the remaining assets to the National Parks Department, so our tour guide was a park ranger.

We toured most of the buildings on the property, and wound up in the main house.  It wasn’t all that big, for what you would think of a major plantation, one that was a working farm for over 200 years, complete with its own store, blacksmith, etc.  The house had been updated with electricity and running water, of course, because it was occupied by family members continuously.  And the kitchen had been “decorated”, to use the term loosely, in a 1970s style.  Most of the furniture had been removed while the Parks Department restored the house.

The ranger guided us into a side room and told us about the use of that room.  It had three doors, two interior and one exterior.  I was standing near a wall between the two interior doors, when I felt someone walk up behind me, over my left shoulder.  You know how it feels when someone walks up behind you, right?  You can feel an energy there.

I glanced over my shoulder.  There were about 20 people on the tour, so I just glanced to see who it was.  There was no one there.  Someone came through the door about 12 feet behind me, and I turned back to the ranger.  But I still felt someone there, so I looked again.  Still no one.

So I asked in my mind, “Hello, who’s there?”  And I immediately got an image of an old photograph.  It featured a Captain from the Union Army of the Civil War.  And I knew that’s who was standing behind me.  But he was a Yankee…?

I asked him to tell me more, and he said he was actually a gentleman, not a career military man, and he was doing his duty in the war.  He indicated that he returned to this plantation after the war and lived out his life there.  I assumed, although I don’t think he told me this, that he returned for a woman and probably married her.

The tour continued, and we found ourselves in the main living room.  A man in the tour group spoke up and said he was related to the family that owned the plantation.  He said his grandmother had grown up in this very house and had been married in this very living room.

He told us that, during the Civil War, the Yankees burned the plantation down the road, but they occupied this house and spared the property.  I asked, “So there were Yankees in the house?”  And he said, yes.

That part was pretty cool, but I was still kind of wondering what this meant, and if I really had a ghost with me or… was this an encounter with a spirit who has crossed over?  I talk to those energies often, but this one came with that presence over my left shoulder.

As the ranger led us out of the house and onto the porch, I noticed that the energy left me, just as I crossed the threshold, as if the ghost couldn’t cross it.  Later, I talked to someone with a lot of experience with ghosts and he said that was definitely a ghost and his behavior was typical.

Well, how about that?

Diana’s Dad Pays Me a Visit

Book Portraits 006This is one of the stories that will be featured in the new edition of Dead On: Spirited Stories from a Medium’s Diary.  So how about that?  You’re getting a sneak peak.  Of course, you can feel free to grab the original now, by clicking on the link above.  Here’s my little tale:

I presented a Suzi-Q & A LIVE psychic event in Dallas, and was very pleased that a lifelong friend of mine could attend.  Diana and I have known each other since childhood, when we both took tap and ballet at Miss Beverly’s dance studio.  I was also delighted when she agreed to act as hostess at my event.  The hostess is sort of like an assistant, checks people in, takes pictures, answers questions afterward, etc.

Even though I knew Diana’s father had passed away a couple of years before this event, I kind of forgot that he might show up.  Diana was going through some tough personal stuff, so I was reading for her based on that, and all of a sudden, there’s her dad!  Now, I knew her parents a bit, of course, and they were just wonderful, nice people, real salt-of-the-earth types, but I hadn’t really hung out at their house since high school.  And–ahem–that’s been two (or three) decades.

Dad had a few things to say about the family, and I could feel that this was a particularly close-knit family, not really a lot of dysfunction between them, and I told Diana that, and reminded her how fortunate she was, which she acknowledged.  Then Dad had a message:  Tell your sister that I’m with her too.  I didn’t know what that meant, but Diana said, “We’ve all seen him since he passed, except for my sister.”  So that was pretty important, and I was really glad to relay that message.

After the event was over, Diana and I went to grab a bite before I headed back to my home near Houston.  In the course of our conversation, Diana asked how she could pay better attention to her own intuition.  I told her to pay attention to everything and most of all, consider the possibilities.  Could this thought that popped into your head mean something?  Could a billboard have a private message just for you?  And, specifically, I told her, “For example, if you’re driving down the freeway and a song comes on the radio that reminds you of your dad, then why can’t that be your dad’s way of saying hello?  Most people will dismiss that, so consider that it really might be.”

A couple of hours later, I was driving back south on I-45, and I had been listening to radio stations on my phone.  I was tired of those, so I tried tuning in to something decent on my car radio.  I pushed the “seek” button once, and the radio landed on a station playing “Through the Years” by Kenny Rogers.

Ever heard it?  It’s a pretty old song, released when I was a teenager.  And suddenly, a long-forgotten memory rushed to my mind.  I was at Diana’s parents’ anniversary party, and her dad played this song for her mom as a loving tribute.  If Diana’s dad wanted to thank me or say hello to me, and if he wanted to choose the song-on-the-radio method that I had just described to his daughter, this was the song.  It was the only song he could possibly have used.  And I was overwhelmed.

I called Diana immediately and she was thrilled!  She also reminded me that I had served as hostess at that anniversary party, just as she had served as hostess for me that day.

Thanks, Mr. Diana’s Dad!

What It’s Like from My Side of a Reading in Writing

Have you heard about my Reading in Writing service yet?  It’s an inexpensive ($99), written version of my BEST Psychic Readings, and it is turning out to be something pretty amazing.  Not just for my clients, but for me too.

Here’s what happens:  The client sends me as many as four questions by email.  I take out one of my note sheets that I use for BEST Psychic Readings, and I start there.  I put the pertinent color for that person, I write down any spirit communication I receive, and in the open-note area, I write whatever information comes to me, including drawing the person’s aura or other symbols or images, along with interpretation.  Finally, I throw a few angel cards and write them with a brief interpretation too.  Then, I scan that in and attach it to the reply email.  At that point, I look at the client’s questions and answer them one at a time.

There may be changes to this format, depending on feedback and my own inspiration, but this is essentially how it works.

And what’s amazing to me is, not only am I getting terrific feedback from clients, but I also have a wonderful experience with each one!  It’s as if I’m walking right by the client, with full access to her whole life!  In the most recent R in W I did, I answered at least part of all the client’s four questions in my hand-written part, before I even saw them!

Not long ago, I asked my angels to give me some of that super-excited and amazed feeling I used to get when I first started giving readings.  After many of those early readings, I would sit on the couch absolutely agog, incredulous that I was able to do what I had just done.  These days, I’m not exactly jaded, but I am used to getting pretty impressive results from readings, and so I don’t feel that super-charged inspiration as much.  But with the Reading in Writing, I’m getting that wonderful feeling again!

The recipient gets to respond to the reading with any questions needed for clarification, and so far, I am not getting a lot of questions, but the feedback is excellent.  All the clients have said it’s exactly what they needed, that they’re inspired, that they’ll be back for more!

All in all, it’s a pretty exciting time around my little atelier.  Want to try it out?  I’m ready for more inspiration!

P.S.  If you’re wondering how I can give a reading to someone I’ve never met, who isn’t even on the phone with me, stay tuned for the next blog post.

“How Can You Read for Someone Who Is Far Away?”

question markThis isn’t the first time I’ve gotten a question like this:  “How does your Reading in Writing work?  How can you read my aura via the email?”

Variations on this question include, how can I read for you over the phone or how can I tell you about someone else in your life if I’ve never met them?

Here’s what I answered this time:

“You know, it’s amazing to me too, but it’s actually almost better for me to read for you without being with you.  Everything is energy, so I just focus my energy on yours and the information comes in.  Sometimes, when I am giving a BEST Psychic Reading by phone, I will close my eyes while the client is saying something and I get much more information when I am not talking or looking at anything!

“If you wanted me to hold something, such as your watch or keys or wedding ring (a process called chiromancy), obviously, we would have to be in the same room—or at least I would have to have that object.  And I can do that; I’ve found I can ‘read’ almost anything, regular playing cards, tea leaves, whatever you put in front of me.  Because the information is not in the object and not in the person—it’s all around us, and I just have to focus on your energy.

“Even if we were face-to-face, I would probably close my eyes for at least part of the reading.  If you see me at a Suzi-Q & A LIVE, you’ll see that I often look down or close my eyes, so that I can ‘see’ what’s in my mind’s eye.”

I hope that helps you to understand how my gifts work for you.  And if you want to know more, you know where to find me!  (And yes, this client did get a reading.)

Are You a Synesthete?

“Well, let me look at that,” I told my client.  “What I’m seeing is that, at about age 32, you’re going to have a break-through.  And it’s yellow, so that means it has to do with your intelligence and self-esteem, like you’ll be using your smarts to do your job, and you’ll feel great about it.”

As you may know, when I work, I often “see” things in my mind’s eye.  I get images of people who have passed away, as well as pictures of what’s going on with the client and what will go on in the future.

One of the most useful things I see in this way is time.  Yes, I see time.  It doesn’t look like a calendar, but it does follow a pattern.  And it has colors associated with it too.  Each day has its own color and so does each month.  If I “look” at your “lifeline”, which is what I call the time of your life from birth to death*, I’ll see certain ages pop out with regard to what I am looking for.

This “crossover” of senses is called synesthesia.  Some people smell colors.  Some people see music.  Others can feel words or get a taste in their mouth when they think of a word.

The root words of synesthesia mean “same senses”.  (Just as anesthesia refers to “no senses.”)  When a person is using one sense in the regular way, such as hearing music, he might also react with another sense, such as seeing a color or tasting a taste.

Synesthesia is not terribly rare, but it’s not common either.  My type of synesthesia, which I can remember having all my life, is the most common kind.

So what about you?  Now that you know what it is, are you a synesthete?

(*I generally do not see a person’s actual death, and if I were to get an age of death, I would never reveal it to the client.  This is not information that anyone needs.)

Crossing Over, a Family Story

As my father-in-law lay dying a number of years ago, I went to visit him in the hospital.  We had always been close, and were probably closer since my husband’s death several years before.  I knew I was going to miss him terribly (and I was certainly right about that).

Cancer had dug its way into Dad’s brain, and he suffered some rages and fits, but I was fortunate to see him only at times when he was lucid.  When I walked into his hospital room, I introduced myself to be sure he knew who I was.  “Dad?  Hi, it’s Suzi.  Do you know who I am?”

“Yes,” he croaked, as there was a tumor pressing on the nerve to his vocal folds.  “You’re Suzi.  Of course, I know you.”

I sat with him a few minutes and then I asked, “Have you seen Tim [my late husband, and his late son]?”

I don’t know why I was surprised to hear him rasp, “Yes.”  He went on to say, “He came and sat in that chair right there.  He told me everything would be all right and I should just do what I want to do.”

Even though that was the answer I had hoped for–or something like it–I was stunned for a moment.  I knew Tim was nearby at that moment, with Dad and me in the hospital room, waiting to help and support Dad’s transition.

My father-in-law has been gone 10 years this month.  I dedicate this post to him, and I am grateful he has love and peace–and Tim–on the Other Side.
